Origin: Malay – Malay word for hitching a ride.

Tumpang/tompang is the malay word for hitching a ride or passing an item to someone who is able to pass on the item to the intended recipient as it is along their way. It can be even used to describe getting someone to help you buy/get things since they are already in the process of doing so.

Phrase:

Mohan: “Ah Beng, you riding today? Later can tumpang me to the MRT station anot??  

Ah Beng: “Sure, since you going to MRT station, I tumpang my EZlink card to you, you help me top up $10. I need to take public transport next week as I will be sending my motorcycle for servicing.
