“Hokkien Peng” refers to hokkien speaking soldiers of the early Singapore Army. This term usually refers to soldiers in the past when most spoke hokkien instead of english due to a lack of education.

“My uncle was an officer leading the hokkien peng in the late 1970s. He told me that even though his men did not have much of an education; they were good soldiers. They were always on the ball and chiong sua in a garang manner”
